When His Belly Suddenly Rose

It started with a choice that felt embarrassingly small: to really look at himself instead of glancing away. In the harsh bathroom light, his stomach didn’t look “big”; it looked stretched, shiny, and foreign, as if it belonged to someone else. The fear that had been pacing in the background finally stepped forward. He drove to the hospital promising himself it was overreacting, clinging to the hope of an easy explanation.

The ultrasound stripped away every excuse. Fluid. Cirrhosis. Years of quiet damage suddenly had a shape and a name. For a moment, he was sure this was the ending. Instead, it became the first honest beginning of his life. He listened, obeyed the restrictions, let himself be fragile in front of others. Slowly, the swelling eased, replaced by something unfamiliar: trust in his own survival. The real miracle wasn’t that his body calmed—it was that he finally answered its first desperate call.
