Stolen Name at the Altar

The invitations had gone out weeks earlier, each one a quiet act of erasure I hadn’t seen until it was far too late, white card stock and navy script announcing a child who did not exist. CONSTANCE MARIE, they read, a name I recognized and didn’t, like a mirror tilted just wrong. My husband said the stationer must have made a mistake; I said, “Your mother proofread them,” and watched the color leave his face.
