Claire survives a terrible car accident that leaves her injured and with gaps in her memory. During her recovery, she meets Richard, a kind nurse who becomes her boyfriend. They fall deeply in love, marry, and seem to begin a happy life together.
But on their wedding night, Richard gets drunk and admits he has a terrible secret. The next morning, Claire finds a letter revealing the truth: Richard was the driver who caused the accident. He survived, while the other driver died according to the initial report. Haunted by guilt, Richard secretly took a job at Claire’s hospital so he could see whether she was okay.
He eventually fell in love with her, but instead of telling her, he continued the relationship and proposed. Before the wedding, he created a financial trust in Claire’s name so she would have complete freedom if she chose to leave him.
Claire is devastated. She loves Richard, but she cannot ignore what he did or the years of deception. She sends him away and takes time to speak with her sister and a therapist.
She realizes two things can be true at once: Richard caused the accident and betrayed her trust, but he also genuinely loves her. She doesn’t know whether their marriage can survive, but she isn’t ready to walk away either.
For the first time, the truth is completely out in the open—and Claire knows the decision about their future will finally be hers.
