My Parents Reported My Car Stolen After I Refused to Give My Sister $15,000

Emma refuses to give her sister Lauren $15,000, so her furious father reports Emma’s paid-off Honda as stolen. Police stop her on the highway, and the officer who approaches is her fiancé Caleb.

After discovering the false report, Emma checks her credit and finds something far worse: over $300,000 in loans had been taken out in her name.

The loans were connected to her parents’ house. Emma soon discovers that her father had forged her signature and created a fake power of attorney, using her good credit for years to keep his failing finances alive.

When Emma confronts him, he tells her that exposing the fraud will destroy the family. But Emma refuses to protect him anymore.

Investigators uncover the forged documents, fraudulent loans, and false police report. Emma cooperates fully, and her father is eventually charged and pleads guilty to fraud and forgery. Her parents lose their house and move into a rental.

Her mother, who knew about the fraud, stops speaking to her. Lauren eventually realizes that much of the lifestyle she enjoyed had been funded through money borrowed using Emma’s identity. She apologizes and begins supporting herself without asking Emma for money.

Emma and Caleb marry later that year. Her credit is eventually repaired, and her name is finally her own again.

Emma keeps the blank sheet of paper where she once wrote her real signature for the investigator.

For years, her family treated her name like something they could use whenever they needed it.

That day, with one honest signature, Emma took it back.
