The Man Who Donated His Kidney Proposed To Me Until Our Wedding Revealed The Truth

A year ago, my kidneys suddenly started failing. I was only thirty-one, and my life became dialysis, medications, and hospital visits. My family was tested, but nobody was compatible. Then my doctor told me a stranger named Nathan wanted to donate a kidney. I met him and asked why. “I matched,” he said. “Walking away felt wrong.” He donated his kidney, and the transplant saved my life. We became close friends, and eventually fell in love.

Then Nathan was diagnosed with aggressive cancer. One month later, he proposed. I said yes, but made him promise one thing: “No lies. Ever.” We got married in a small ceremony. Immediately afterward, Nathan took my hand and said: “I need to tell you something. I have a twelve-year-old daughter.” I was devastated. He had hidden an entire child from me.

His daughter, Sophie, was afraid that Nathan would give everything to other people and leave nothing for her. I realized Nathan had spent his entire life “saving” people without asking how his choices affected those closest to him. I told him he couldn’t decide everything for everyone and call it love. Months later, things were still complicated, but Nathan changed. He stopped making decisions for us. He started asking. One day, Sophie gave me a mug that said: “WORLD’S MOST COMPLICATED STEPMOM.” Nathan’s said: “ASK YOUR FAMILY FIRST.” We laughed. For the first time, Nathan wasn’t trying to save anyone. He was simply sitting beside the people he loved. And maybe that was the greatest gift he could give us.
