I Watched My Son Laugh at a Waiter With Down Syndrome, but Instead of Making a Scene, I Waited Until We Got Home

Fourteen-year-old Leo makes fun of Sam, a waiter with a disability, while celebrating his good report card with his mother, Ellen. Ellen is deeply disappointed but chooses not to humiliate him. Instead, she takes him home and shows him photographs of his uncle Danny, who had Down syndrome and died before Leo was born.

Ellen tells Leo about Danny’s life—his love of movies, his job at a theater, his best friend, and the cruelty he sometimes faced because of his disability. Leo realizes that what he did to Sam was the same kind of cruelty Danny had experienced.

Leo admits he was wrong and asks to apologize to Sam. A few days later, he returns to the restaurant and sincerely apologizes. Sam accepts, telling him that people had treated him that way before.

The experience changes Leo. He keeps Danny’s photograph on his desk and asks his mother to tell him more about his uncle. Ellen realizes that Danny’s story, which she had kept hidden away for years, has finally become part of Leo’s life.

She understands that this wasn’t the lesson she planned to teach her son that night—but it was the lesson he needed.
