My In-Laws Treated Our Backyard Like a Free Restaurant Every Weekend, So the Next Time They Arrived With Nothing, I Changed the Menu

Annie has spent six years hosting her mother-in-law Juliette and the extended family at her countryside home, paying for the food, wine, and extra work while Juliette constantly criticizes her. Her husband Theo knows it is a problem but avoids confronting his mother.

When Juliette announces a weekend visit for twelve people, Annie decides things must change. She prepares homemade menus with some food included and other items—barbecue, wine, cheese—listed with prices.

Juliette is shocked and calls it an insult. Annie calmly explains that for years the entire cost and effort of family gatherings have fallen on her and Theo. Instead of backing down, Theo finally supports Annie and asks his mother to let her finish.

Juliette eventually realizes how unfair she has been. She apologizes for criticizing Annie in her own kitchen and puts €60 on the table. Margot and Claire also contribute. The family continues the barbecue, but this time everyone helps.

Later, Juliette admits she has treated Annie’s kitchen as if it were her own and promises to bring the wine next time. Margot agrees to bring homemade bread.

Theo also realizes he should have defended Annie sooner and promises to stop avoiding difficult conversations with his mother.

The family is not suddenly perfect, but the relationship changes. Annie finally understands that setting boundaries did not destroy the family—it made their relationship more honest and reciprocal.

Better. Not perfect. Better was enough.
